I’ve thought about the reasons why business is my field of choice.
It’s pretty simple, actually. At the end of the day, I’d like to consider myself as an artist, first and foremost. To me, each product or service is a painting. Every move I make, is like the stroke of a painter’s brush - a splash of red here, a little shading there - and eventually the painting begins to form.
That’s how I’ve always viewed business, as an art form. Products are living entities that people can interact with and experience like a work of art. Unfortunately, I wasn’t blessed with the ability to sing, or dance, or even draw. I think if you ask most people, that’s what they would consider to be art.
But I think in most artists’ minds, they create art as a method of self-expression. And business is the way I am able to express myself. I express myself through my products. The way a musician might obsess for hours over the sound of a particular note, is the way I obsess over every little detail of a product. It’s like rock and roll, but with a different set of instruments.
Picasso had a saying: “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” I think if you ask most artists, they feel a bit guilty because they know that they wouldn’t have been able to create what they made without the influence of those who have come before them. They were influenced and inspired to create their own art because of some of the amazing pieces of work that came before.
That’s probably why I create products. I can’t sing, dance, draw, or paint, but I can create products. And I want to contribute to that sphere of humanity, and hopefully inspire people the same way I’ve been inspired by those that have created before me. All the awards, press, or congratulations pale in comparison to even just a single person telling me I’ve inspired them in some way to follow their dreams and create their own things. I’m here on earth to inspire the dreamers to become doers.
